About Eider Cove Oysters

Harvest location: New Meadows River, Bath, Maine

How they’re grown: The farm is located just a stones throw from Peters house, a mere 100 feet off the rocky shoreline. The oysters are grown entirely in mesh bags at the surface, except for a winter stint in cages sunk to the bottom. This allows the oysters to stay safe below the frozen estuary surface.

Why they’re unique: Named for the Eider ducks that hang in the little cove where Peter’s floats are housed. Eider’s love oysters, put they haven’t quite figured out how to break into the bags they are kept in. Fingers crossed that they can’t, we want to keep these for ourselves!

Story: Peter harvested his first crop in 2015. He knew the area in front of his house was ideal for a farm, after watching some of his friends get into the farming business, he thought he would give it a try. He had dug clams as a kid, and pulled lobsters for decades--so he knew what life on the water was like. Besides, the commute was unbeatable…

Oyster FAQ

How long do my oysters keep?

Your oysters keep in the refrigerator for 5-7 days!  You can order a day or two early to make sure you have them in time for your gathering.  They are totally fine hangin’ out in the cool air.  

How do I store these bad boys?

When you receive your package, pull them out of the box (these guys need a little fresh air!). Grab a mixing bowl and throw the mesh bag in the bowl so that the oysters don’t leak all over your refrigerator. Grab a damp cloth and throw the cloth over the bowl.  You are good to go for the next 5-7 days. Doesn’t hurt to dampen the cloth each day to keep them moist and chilled.

Should I keep them on ice?

Only put the oysters on ice before service.  The oysters will actually die in the melted fresh water so do not store the oysters on ice.  They will not like this.

How are they shipped?

We ship using FedEx Overnight service. You will receive tracking info after the label has been printed the day before your oysters are set to arrive.  We do not require a signature – Fedex will leave your package at your doorstep.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Short answer: YES!

Great oysters. Nice plump meaty oysters

"These oysters were really good, slightly briny a nice plump meaty oyster. The only downside is the shell as long and sort of brittle so the beak tended to break, which made it a little bit of a pain but once you got to hang of it, it wasn’t hard. The only issue I had was shipping, which they just packed the oysters in a bag and the ones in contact with the ice packs or frozen. Other companies pack there’s in a box with foam separating the oysters from the ice."
