Farmer:
Ben Hamilton and Cameron Barner

Size: ~2.5"

They have gorgeous clean shells reminiscent of Italian marble. The meat fills the cup and is full of bright cucumber flavors and a delicate brine. The leases proximity to a steady freshwater stream brings a sweetness to the oysters like no other. Meat is juicy, with an impressive adductor mussel to add to its toothsome bite.

About Love Point Oysters

Harvest location: Middle Bay, Harpswell ME

How they’re grown: These babes are grown in floating cages that are flipped once a week to guarantee strong shell growth and fouling removal. The oysters are between 18 and 30 months when brought to market.

Why they’re unique:
This special location in Casco Bay is not easy to get to, but worth the ride. They have a 6 mile run in their 19’ Carolina Skiff (named Ralph) which is no joke – especially in intense weather. They also do all of their work on their boat – culling, cleaning, sorting, bagging – again, seriously hard work.

Story:
Cameron, Island Creek farm alumnus, was an important member of our farm team for several years. We were sad to see him leave, but excited for his future as he embarked on a Master’s Degree in Aquaculture. While in school, Ben reached out to Cameron to help with a school project. Their relationship grew from there and now they are the farm’s two-man team, beginning their first season in 2019. They are also involved in the local shellfish community, Shellfish Growers Climate Coalition and most proudly, they are members of the environmental non-for-profit 1% of the Planet, where they donate 1% of their total revenue annually.

Oyster FAQ

How long do my oysters keep?

Your oysters keep in the refrigerator for 5-7 days!  You can order a day or two early to make sure you have them in time for your gathering.  They are totally fine hangin’ out in the cool air.

How do I store these bad boys?

When you receive your package, pull them out of the box (these guys need a little fresh air!). Grab a mixing bowl and throw the mesh bag in the bowl so that the oysters don’t leak all over your refrigerator. Grab a damp cloth and throw the cloth over the bowl.  You are good to go for the next 5-7 days. Doesn’t hurt to dampen the cloth each day to keep them moist and chilled.

Should I keep them on ice?

Only put the oysters on ice before service.  The oysters will actually die in the melted fresh water so do not store the oysters on ice.  They will not like this.

How are they shipped?

We ship using FedEx Overnight service. You will receive tracking info after the label has been printed the day before your oysters are set to arrive.  We do not require a signature – Fedex will leave your package at your doorstep.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Short answer: YES!

Our ClimaCell thermal liners are made of 90% FSC certified virgin kraft paper and corn starch, which allows you to recycle the insulated liner at home along with the cardboard box.

Not only are the liners water repellant, they’re just as insulating as traditional styrofoam AND they can be recycled up to 5 times. Saving the planet has never been easier.

Love Point oysters from Harpswell, ME

"Ordered 50, arrived two days later all alive and well. Minimally soiled with ocean debris easily removed with a plastic scrub brush. All oyster opened easily with a proper oyster knife. No screw driver or microwave necessary. They were all plump, juicy and 2 and1/2 “ to 3” in size. No huge old tough clunkers. The taste was wonderful, tender , clean, cold, briny and ending with a slight sweet oyster meat flavor. No condiments necessary. Excellence start to finish."

Awesome Oysters all around

"Very well balanced all around solid oyster, I really enjoied the amount of oyster liquor/juice that these retain from the deep cups that they have. These also came super clean and I barely needed to clean before shucking making it super easy."

Vincent C. (5/5)

Impossible to shuck! 😡

"I’ve been shucking oysters and clams since I was a kid…. 30-40 years now. These oysters are the most difficult I’ve ever shucked, and I order from Island Creek 2-4 times a year the last 3-5 years. I was literally only able to shuck 8-10 oysters out of the 50 i bought, and had to grill the rest (unfortunately). These oysters are the perfect size, and have beautiful shells. I prefer my oysters on the half shell, and those i was able to eat that way may very well be in the top 2-3 oysters ive ever had. But be warned."
