Farmer: Spawned by Skip Bennett; Harvested by Mark Begley (of Beach Point Oyster fame!)

Location: Barnstable, MA

Size: ~2"

Story: You might know them as the wild harvested, gnarly big boys that can grow bigger than the size of your hand. Traditionally, surf clams are only found in two settings - as the generic chopped canned clams in grocery stores, or in high end sushi restaurants where only the foot is eaten as something of a delicacy. That is, until Skip Bennett entered the chat and began spawning surf clams in our hatchery.

Why they're unique: Farming surf clams (something that essentially has never been done before) allows us to harvest them at the perfect 'littleneck' size and essentially use them in the same way: sautéed in a pan for pasta, simmered in broth for Driveway Clams , or eaten raw on the half shell. A perfect mix of a hard and soft shell - the most versatile clam out there.

How they taste: Sweet, briney, more beautifully subtle than littleneck clams but not underwhelmingly so.

We recommend enjoying by Sunday, May 7th.

And don't forget the clam knife!

Baby Steamers

"These are tasty enough, but I would not order them again. I didn’t use them as Steamers, and instead used them for cooking a Pasta dish. A lot of work for an OK flavor. Like another reviewer, I also had clam mortality upon delivery."

"Excellent! Prepared in a white wine sauce over linguine. Size for this linguine dish was fine. Arrived in good condition. Very clean. Only one clam discarded. Will purchase again."

First time - great!

"These are a real gem. Great flavor similar to littlenecks but a tad more robust. Loved them!"

Surf clams

"Smaller than little necks but tender and sweet. Delicious!"

Just ok... Small

"I wanted to support the idea of farming surf clams, ordered 100. Felt very expensive for what you get. We got 100 very small (~1.25 inches length) surf clams that were as expected from island creek very fresh. Ate a couple raw, somewhat similar to small cherrystones, taste was great. Ended up cooking pasta and clams for dinner with them and they did taste great. I commend the effort by the farmer and island creek for trying something new but unless they are grown to cherrystone size (2-3 inches) I don't think these are worth the money, I could buy a bag of clams or muscles from a reputable grocery store for cooking pasta dishes for far less cost. Thank you for trying, I'll stick to oysters. Keep me posted if they offer a larger option."
