About Sea Kist Oysters

Harvest location: Dutch Harbor, Jamestown, RI

How they’re grown: Sea Kist are grown in floating flip farm baskets that keep them elevated in the water column for maximum access to nutrients and tumbling wave action. After 14-24 months, they are ready for harvest. The farm is located in the southern part of Narragansett Bay, one of the most pristine, unspoiled locations in Southern New England.

Why they’re unique:
Pure Atlantic Ocean water surges in on the incoming tide and Narragansett Bay water floods on the outgoing tide, which lends a complex flavor profile that varies beautifully season to season.

Story:
We’ve worked with Nick for years and have enjoyed using his farm as an excuse to visit Rhody in the summer. Nick started out as a commercial shellfish harvester in Narragansett bay at age 14 and caught the bug. In 2003, he started his first farm, East Beach Blondes, as a side project to supplement his income as a full time commercial harvester. In 2018, Nick bought the Sea Kist farm from Bill Cregan where he remained a 10% owner. The last 3 years have been spent converting the lease into a flip farm.

All in the name: "Kist" is a chest that treasure would be stored in, so "Sea Kist" is like the treasure chest of the sea!

Oyster FAQ

How long do my oysters keep?

Your oysters keep in the refrigerator for 5-7 days!  You can order a day or two early to make sure you have them in time for your gathering.  They are totally fine hangin’ out in the cool air.

How do I store these bad boys?

When you receive your package, pull them out of the box (these guys need a little fresh air!). Grab a mixing bowl and throw the mesh bag in the bowl so that the oysters don’t leak all over your refrigerator. Grab a damp cloth and throw the cloth over the bowl.  You are good to go for the next 5-7 days. Doesn’t hurt to dampen the cloth each day to keep them moist and chilled.

Should I keep them on ice?

Only put the oysters on ice before service.  The oysters will actually die in the melted fresh water so do not store the oysters on ice.  They will not like this.

How are they shipped?

We ship using FedEx Overnight service. You will receive tracking info after the label has been printed the day before your oysters are set to arrive.  We do not require a signature – Fedex will leave your package at your doorstep.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Short answer: YES!

Our ClimaCell thermal liners are made of 90% FSC certified virgin kraft paper and corn starch, which allows you to recycle the insulated liner at home along with the cardboard box.

Not only are the liners water repellant, they’re just as insulating as traditional styrofoam AND they can be recycled up to 5 times. Saving the planet has never been easier.

Reviews

Great!

"These oysters are delicious. Really nice brininess to them. Some of the reviews said they were hard to shuck, but I’ve found them to be pretty easy."

Just as good as I expected!

"As a first time purchaser I was a little hesitant about ordering oysters online, but I was pleasantly surprised that everything was great. The packaging had a temperature sensor on it that confirmed the order stayed cold. The oysters were delicious and fresh. Everyone loved the surprise of having fresh oysters with caviar as an appetizer. I have had Sea Kist oysters before and loved the firm briny taste. I will definitely be ordering again!"

Jesse N. (5/5)

As Advertised - Excellent!

"Always get our oysters from Island Creek. First time trying Sea Kist and it won't be the last! As advertised, briny upfront with a sweet finish. Also loved the perfect sized plumpness for our palate. We will be enjoying these Sea Kist again soon!"

Charles T. (5/5)

Fabulous!

"Our oysters arrived right on time and tasted fabulous. We have never been disappointed with oysters from Island Creek. They have been a New Year's Eve staple in our home."

Marcia P. (5/5)

Perfect Balance

"The balance of flavor and size with these Sea Kist oysters was absolutely perfect. Decent salt up front and a buttery smooth and sweet finish. Not too big and not too small regarding their size, Goldilocks, I'd say. They were best raw on their own in my opinion, though others said they accepted acid well. Best review I can say is I order more the very next day and my wife even said these were better than some Maine oysters we had the week before at a nice hotspot restaurant in town recently. Cheers!"

Brent R. (5/5)

A Hit !

"The Sea Kist are currently our favorite so far this year! Can’t wait till I see them on the site again."

Christopher S. (5/5)

In my book, perfect

"There's an undulating wave of salinity that's beach perfect, mixed with a bright pleasing taste. And a shell that's strong, doesn't crack, yet yields to the shuck, simply and cleanly. This oyster deserves a royal or personal name. A new favorite."

Michael S. (5/5)
