Farmer:
Georgetown Island Oyster Co-Op

Size: ~

As one co-op farmer describes them, their oysters taste like "salty sweet heaven". The Sheepscot River feeds the farm's quiet cove with nutrient-rich water on every incoming tide, providing a buttery, sweet, pork fatty flavor that would pair nicely with a crisp pilsner. HEARTY meats fill super strong shells that are a dream to shuck.

About Robinhood Cove Oysters

Harvest location: Georgetown Island, ME

How they’re grown: Robinhood Coves are raised in floating Oystergro cages and various oyster bags in a peaceful cove off Georgetown Island in the pristine Sheepscot River, an area with rich tidal mud flats, salt marshes, meadows, and forest. Heaven? Perhaps. Floating bags and cages rock and tumble the oysters as they develop, creating super deep cups and strong shells. Grow-out takes at least 18 months.

Why they’re unique:
These are grown by the Georgetown Island Oyster Co-Op; the first co-op dedicated to oyster farming in Maine. This co-op is mostly composed of former commercial clammers and lobstermen who made the switch to aquaculture as a way to protect their livelihoods against the very real threats of climate change, while still continuing the heritage of working off the water in Maine.

Story:
Historic Georgetown is a close community centered around their marine economy. For over three hundred years the island’s backbone was boat building, fin fishing, digging for clams, oysters and worms, mussel picking, ground fishing, urchin harvesting, shrimping and lobstering. The challenges of a changing coastal economy and the changes occurring in the Gulf of Maine inspired the formation of the Georgetown Island Oyster Cooperative in 2017. They met those challenges by diversifying while preserving their traditional livelihood. Composed of seven independent farmers, they share space, equipment, ideas, and labor. Regardless of which one of them grew the Robinhood Cove oysters you enjoy, they take great pride in the quality and consistency of their oysters!

Oyster FAQ

How long do my oysters keep?

Your oysters keep in the refrigerator for 5-7 days!  You can order a day or two early to make sure you have them in time for your gathering.  They are totally fine hangin’ out in the cool air.

How do I store these bad boys?

When you receive your package, pull them out of the box (these guys need a little fresh air!). Grab a mixing bowl and throw the mesh bag in the bowl so that the oysters don’t leak all over your refrigerator. Grab a damp cloth and throw the cloth over the bowl.  You are good to go for the next 5-7 days. Doesn’t hurt to dampen the cloth each day to keep them moist and chilled.

Should I keep them on ice?

Only put the oysters on ice before service.  The oysters will actually die in the melted fresh water so do not store the oysters on ice.  They will not like this.

How are they shipped?

We ship using FedEx Overnight service. You will receive tracking info after the label has been printed the day before your oysters are set to arrive.  We do not require a signature – Fedex will leave your package at your doorstep.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Short answer: YES!

Our ClimaCell thermal liners are made of 90% FSC certified virgin kraft paper and corn starch, which allows you to recycle the insulated liner at home along with the cardboard box.

Not only are the liners water repellant, they’re just as insulating as traditional styrofoam AND they can be recycled up to 5 times. Saving the planet has never been easier.
