About Beach Plum Oysters

Harvest location: Westport, MA

How they’re grown: Once the Beach Plums have been in nurseries in the river, they head out to the deep water farm at the mouth of Buzzards Bay. It takes a 45-minute ride on a retired sea cucumber boat from Maine to get out to the ocean lease. It is here that the Beach Plums complete their grow out in huge tower cages suspended 10’ below the surface where they are constantly pounded by ocean swells.

Why they’re unique:
Kerian operates the only two commercial oyster farms in Westport. Altogether, he has 78 acres, only 10 of which are currently being farmed---so plenty of room to grow! Beach Plums are named for the plants that cover the sand dunes and flower in Westport in June. Mark your calendars, it sounds like a great time to visit.

Story:
Kerian and his wife, Kristin, started the farm in 2009 and were the first in Westport to receive an aquaculture grant. Talk about making history! Kerian has always been obsessed with the ocean. He received a degree in aquaculture and was lobstering before diving into the oyster world. Their first endeavor was the Beach Plum farm, which is an incredible ocean operation located directly at the mouth of Buzzards Bay. The Riptide project started several years later – oddly a stone’s throw away from the Beach Plum farm. Kerian and Kristin also opened up a raw bar, called Westport Sea Farms, located where they bring in their oysters. They have 3 daughters and 4 boats – so as you can probably guess – one is named for each daughter and the big ocean boat is named the ‘Kristin Marie.’ Kerian is innovative, full of energy and just an all-around nice dude.

Oyster FAQ

How long do my oysters keep?

Your oysters keep in the refrigerator for 5-7 days!  You can order a day or two early to make sure you have them in time for your gathering.  They are totally fine hangin’ out in the cool air.

How do I store these bad boys?

When you receive your package, pull them out of the box (these guys need a little fresh air!). Grab a mixing bowl and throw the mesh bag in the bowl so that the oysters don’t leak all over your refrigerator. Grab a damp cloth and throw the cloth over the bowl.  You are good to go for the next 5-7 days. Doesn’t hurt to dampen the cloth each day to keep them moist and chilled.

Should I keep them on ice?

Only put the oysters on ice before service.  The oysters will actually die in the melted fresh water so do not store the oysters on ice.  They will not like this.

How are they shipped?

We ship using FedEx Overnight service. You will receive tracking info after the label has been printed the day before your oysters are set to arrive.  We do not require a signature – Fedex will leave your package at your doorstep.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Short answer: YES!

Our ClimaCell thermal liners are made of 90% FSC certified virgin kraft paper and corn starch, which allows you to recycle the insulated liner at home along with the cardboard box.

Not only are the liners water repellant, they’re just as insulating as traditional styrofoam AND they can be recycled up to 5 times. Saving the planet has never been easier.

Reviews

Very good oysters!

"We had Beach Plums and Norumbegas from Ipswich Fish Market and Beach Plums were our favorite. While the shells were on the smaller size, they were full and very tasty. We spent extra time washing them given the reviews here and didn’t experience any grit in our shucked oysters. I would definitely get these again!"

Not what I expected

"Unfortunately, I was not impressed with these oysters. They were very small, not very briny, brittle shells and muddy. When I opened the first few, I noticed mud in the brine. I checked the rest of them and found several with mud n the hinge area. So I ended up scrubbing the entire remainder of the shipment under running water. I'm sure they were cleaned before they were shipped but the structure of the shell allowed them to retain the mud in the hinge area. I feel sure others may have had a different experience but I was disappointed with these. I'm not saying they were bad, I'm just saying they were not my type of oyster. I will not order Beach Plums again."

Beach Plum oysters were fresh and delightful

"Island Creek Oysters never disappoint, and their Beach Plum oysters are one of many examples of why they’re so beloved. The oysters had a beautiful briny flavor with a smooth, clean finish, and were incredibly fresh upon delivery. Each bite captured the essence of the ocean, making them an absolute delight for any oyster lover. Enjoy it with a simple mignonette or by itself, Beach Plum oysters are a true treat. Highly recommend!"

Khiem B. (4/5)

These were ok. Small and

"These were ok. Small and not as “meaty”. Had to toss 3 bad ones. Flavor was ok, but still prefer your Duxbury ones."

Jack C. (4/5)

Fresh and delicious

"Time for me to reorder. I truly enjoyed these oysters"

Eric D. (5/5)

I would never buy these oysters again. Extremely

"Just purchased 100 count of beach plum oysters. 25 percent of my was dried up 50 percent of the oysters were translucent and or had black growths or deformed shells"

Peter H. (1/5)

"Will not order these oysters again. They were very tasty, clean, and briny, but very hard to shuck with brittle shells. 5 Stars for the Island Creek as a company will be ordering again from here often."

Wesley (4/5)

Briny & easy to open

"Very different from our local oysters in Cape May, but delicious. Strong flavor of the ocean, almost sea weedy."

Carolinn W. (5/5)

Salt forward

"Enjoyed these - easily shucked as well."
