Farmer: Skip Bennett

Location: Duxbury, MA

How they’re grown: The clam seed is spawned in our hatchery in Duxbury, the same one where we produce millions of oysters and they're hand harvested by Skip!

Story: As quoted in the Boston Globe by Devra First, “It’s a fine New England story. Skip Bennett, lobsterman’s son, grows up digging shellfish in Duxbury, where shipbuilding was once the town business… Bennett decides he’s going to try growing clams here: Clams die, exeunt clams. But what Masshole is going to give up on his home turf that easily? So he pivots to oysters, which turn out to thrive in the rough and tumble microclimate of frigid Duxbury Bay.”

And the rest is history, folks. While Duxbury has gone on to produce more oysters annually than all of Cape Cod and Maine combined, and is now known as “That place where the oysters come from”, it all started with the clams.

Don't forget a clam knife!
