About Blackstone Point Oysters

Harvest location: Damariscotta River, ME

How they’re grown: Blackstone Point's crew uses a range of growing techniques throughout their oysters' growth cycle - bottle and barrel upwellers, grow cages, floating tumblers, and bottom culture - each one suited for use in various contours of the Damariscotta River.

Their oysters begin their journey as seed in a nursery at the mouth of the legendary river called Great Salt Bay where the water is warmer and less salty than the final grow-out site further upstream. It takes anywhere from 1.5-2 years for Blackstone Points to reach harvestable size.


Why they’re unique: 
The happy mingling of fresh and saltwater throughout the oysters' lifecycle - brackish water at the start of their journey in the nursery, and the briny finish at our main lease down river.

Story: 
Meet Brendan Parson - oyster farmer, raw bar owner and distribution man, all in one. Brendan first dipped his toe into the world of aquaculture when he worked on an oyster farm in high school. In 2015, he decided to start his own business, converting an Oscar Mayer hot dog cart into Maine's first oyster-bar-on-wheels. One year later, Brendan started Blackstone Point Oysters, and a year after that he signed a lease on an old gas station in Newcastle, ME which he transformed into an oyster distribution hub and raw bar called Shuck Station. Oyster farmers are a unique breed; entrepreneurial, creative, hardworking. Clearly, the Blackstone Point crew is no exception.

Oyster FAQ

How long do my oysters keep?

Your oysters keep in the refrigerator for 5-7 days!  You can order a day or two early to make sure you have them in time for your gathering.  They are totally fine hangin’ out in the cool air.  

How do I store these bad boys?

When you receive your package, pull them out of the box (these guys need a little fresh air!). Grab a mixing bowl and throw the mesh bag in the bowl so that the oysters don’t leak all over your refrigerator. Grab a damp cloth and throw the cloth over the bowl.  You are good to go for the next 5-7 days. Doesn’t hurt to dampen the cloth each day to keep them moist and chilled.

Should I keep them on ice?

Only put the oysters on ice before service.  The oysters will actually die in the melted fresh water so do not store the oysters on ice.  They will not like this.

How are they shipped?

We ship using FedEx Overnight service. You will receive tracking info after the label has been printed the day before your oysters are set to arrive.  We do not require a signature – Fedex will leave your package at your doorstep.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Short answer: YES!

Our ClimaCell thermal liners are made of 90% FSC certified virgin kraft paper and corn starch, which allows you to recycle the insulated liner at home along with the cardboard box.⁠
